How to Train Your Dog to Accept Collar Handling without Biting or Pulling Away

You have a dog that doesn't love to have their collar touched. This is what you are going to do over SEVERAL days, a few times a day, for a few minutes each time.

  1. Put hand close to collar without touch and give a treat and give a verbal praise

  2. Do this 95 million times. Or until your dog stop flinching or moving away. You might have to start with your hand really far away depending how much your dog hate you, a'hem I mean doesn't want you to touch their collar.

  3. Continue getting your hand closer and closer and keep giving a treat-either to the mouth or throw the treat away

  4. Touch the collar for ONE second and give a treat.

  5. Vary the length of the TOUCH. Not a grab. Not their yet. Some times it is one second, some times two, sometimes you don't even touch. Continue touching or not touching the collar and giving a treat, making it easier and more challenging for your dog.

  6. Possibly WEEKS or months later you can put one finger around the collar and give a treat.

  7. Continue making it easier by only touching the collar and sometimes hooking your finger around it. Reward with praise and treats.

  8. Finally, hold the collar and give a treat. Vary how long you hold it for. Make it fun!

  9. Say 'free' and let go of the collar.

  10. You can also now train your dog 'collar'. Say 'collar' and grab the collar. Eventually, when you say 'collar' your dog will come to you and give you his collar so you can hold on to him.

The length of time that it takes for this new skill is completely up to your dog and how long they have been practicing being resistant to your collar grabs. Go slow and reap the rewards.
